I have read of a lot of definitions for the term culture. It really depends on who is defining it and what time of the day or place it is.
For the purpose of this article, I will define culture within the context of an organization that from the onset committed to creating and building a certain culture and also built the structures and policies around this. And in there lies the things that must happen –from writing it down to tracking it, measuring it and refining it as the organization grows.
So what is an organizational culture? In brief, it is the targeted means an organization goes about achieving its objectives; built into the things that matter and are valued. It is the feel and touch of an organization.
It is sum of the tangibles and the intangibles. If I were to ascribe percentages to tangibles and non-tangibles- I will say 40:60 with the higher percentage for the intangibles.
And of course, the business case for a strong culture abounds evidencing that organsizations with strong cultures outperform those with weak or non-existent (unknown) culture. Really, there are plenty good reasons to pursue a strong culture.
Start your journey of a strong culture today. And if you are not sure your culture is what is it should be or where it should be, we can help.
